Thigh-length tunic with short sleeves reminiscent of the Greek chamys, worn over a round gown with a narrow belt or ribbon tie, especially for evening wear 1794-early 19th century. Tunics were loose upper garments worn over an under-dress, of varying lengths below the waist and closed in front (as opposed to those open in front and reaching the ground behind, which were called robes).
