In the early 19th century large squares of muslin, gauze, lawn or linen folded diagonally and draped around the neck, or sometimes worn around the head, were called handkerchiefs. From circa 1818, lengths of flimsy material worn round the neck and shoulders were named fichus, and small handkerchiefs, often edged with lace, were carried in the hand from the 1820s.
