Expensive and delicate, they became popular for court wear where they were worn upright, and other dress occasions in the 1770s, becoming highly fashionable for evening dress in the '90s. Ostriches were heavily hunted, but by the 19th century the farming of ostriches allowed farmers to pluck the feathers instead of killing the birds.
