At the beginning of the 19th century, a three-quarter-length, short-waisted coat with or without sleeves and often with a broad turned-down collar; towards the end of the first decade it was usually sleeved and ankle-length with one or more shoulder capes. By being worn closed, it developed into the pelisse-robe. The terms 'pelisse' and 'redingote' seem to have been interchangeable in the early 19th century and again in the 1830s.
