An over-dress, the skirt open in front and reaching the ground behind, worn over an under-dress or skirt (whereas if it was closed but worn over an underskirt it was usually called a tunic). It could also refer to a gown (a front-fastening dress) or to an outdoor garment or pelisse which developed into a pelisse-robe. From the mid 1840s the name was used for a round (or closed) dress.
