Unstructured informal dress in a lightweight material, made all in one piece and put on over the head rather than stepping sideways into it; circa 1780-1810. In the early 19th century the chemise dress had short sleeves, no sash, often fastened with buttons down the front from neck to hem, and a high neckline with a falling frill or cut low.
