Hats were considered less proper than bonnets for much of the 19th century. There were numerous different styles and though many had names, they were usually not given in the magazines. In the 1830s day hats, worn with carriage and promenade costume, can be hard to distinguish from traditional bonnets with deep crowns and wide, open brims, but always had a brim at the back though often hidden by the bavolet. The same garment might be referred to by both terms in the fashion pages.
