Square or oblong wrap worn from the mid 18th century, chiefly but not exclusively for indoor wear. Made of light wool or cashmere for spring or autumn and lighter-weight materials such as muslin, silk, cotton or lace in summer, they might have woven, printed or embroidered designs. The size of fashionable shawls increased with the expanding size of the skirt, and could be up to 12 feet long in the 1860s.
