This was more functional and less formal than that worn during fashionable afternoon or evening promenades, worn for informal walks and errands. It should not be rich or showy but plain, well-cut and simple in quiet colours. It was a shorter length than indoor skirts, and was looped-up in the late 1850s-early 60s. It always included an outer garment, hat, gloves and often a parasol.
