1817-50. Day dress derived from the pelisse. It fastened right down the front or later to knee-level, opening over a petticoat from circa 1839. Sometimes the fastening was on one side. The terms 'redingote' and 'pelisse dress' were often loosely used for the same type of garment in the 1830s, but known as a redingote from circa 1840.
