A shorter robe, often coloured, worn over a white or light-coloured petticoat, mainly for evening wear circa 1824-1827. Tunics were also worn in the mid-late 1860s as one of the ways to achieve the fashionable double skirt, with the upper skirt made in one with the bodice.
