Dinner, the main meal of the day, became later in fashionable society from 3 or 4 o'clock in the 18th century to 7.30 or 8 by the mid 19th. Dinner parties were not formal occasions so half dress was worn, but it should be stately and splendid, and women should be more covered up than for a ball with low necklines only if filled with a fichu or scarf, and often long sleeves. The lady of the house was advised not to dress as much as her guests.
