The dress of earlier periods was romantically revived in the early Victorian period, emulated in high fashion and for costume balls. 18th century dress-styles were popular and richly flowered brocaded silks in the 18th century-style were used for evening wear circa 1835-45. The period was revisited again in the 1850s to early '70s with frequent references fo the styles of Louis XIV, XV and XVI due to the Empress Eugenie's devotion to the period.
