Each plate is accompanied by a 3 or 4 page biographical notice and description written by Stephens. Published by Sampson Low, Marston, Searle and Rivington: Crown Buildings, 188 Fleet Street, London E.C. in 1884. The publication was originally published in 6 monthly parts from March-August 1884. Each monthly part cost 5 shillings and included 4 portraits with their accompanying text.
