Gillray is well known for his prints inspired by contemporary events, but he also made fun of the world of fashion. Prints looking humorously at the extremes of fashionable clothing were sometimes based on sketches made by amateur artists. For example, A back view of the cape (D12444) shows the fashion for large cape collars, as well as hair powder worn ostentatiously on the shoulders of the jacket. An inscription on this print tells us that it was based on a sketch by a Miss Keate.
