As well as his more familiar caricatures and political satires, Gillray also produced a smaller number of ‘straight’ prints. These range from a series showing Turkish costumes, including The Grand Sultan (D12491), to genre pictures such as The triumph of benevolence (D13059). An element of humour or satire can be detected even in these apparently serious prints however. Perhaps most noteworthy is Gillray's attempt to produce a straightforward portrait of Prime Minister William Pitt (D13068). Despite Gillray's best efforts the face is virtually a caricature. His publisher refused to produce the agreed number of prints, so Gillray engraved a second plate for another publisher; this again was a failure.
