A fine cotton fabric in a plain weave with a downy nap, imported from India from circa 1670 and manufactured in Britain from circa 1780. In the 19th century the varieties used fell into seven categories: book muslin, Indian, leno, Madras, mull muslin, organdie and Swiss muslin. It was the most popular fabric for neo-classical styles due to its soft, transparent properties.
