Bonnet with a crown of soft fabric shaped to the head or puffed out, and a stiff brim of straw or other material around the face. They were especially popular in the early 19th century, and in the early 1830s when the crown became taller and cylindrical, and a number of variations developed such as the bibi. In French plates the term might also refer to a soft brimless cap.
