Parasols became very small just before 1800, often with a cover that could be tilted to lie parallel to the stick. They became larger and more utilitarian in the 1820s-30s and usually in a single colour, often green or brown. From the late 1830s-1865 they tended to be small with slender and usually folding sticks, often fringed or with embroidered borders, though walking parasols were plainer and larger that elegant carriage parasols; plain silk covered in lace was fashionable from the late 50s-early 60s. After 1865 they became plainer, larger and heavier to serve as umbrellas aswell.
