Anglesey was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Ireland in 1828 at the height of the turmoil created by the Radical leader Daniel O'Connell. Determined to act impartially, he soon came to the conclusion that some kind of reform was necessary. His relations with members of O'Connell's Catholic Association prompted the King's demand for his recall. This was hastened when a letter from Anglesey to the Catholic Archbishop of Armagh came to light, promising that religious concessions would be pursued as a matter of urgency. The day of Anglesey's departure was a day of mourning in Dublin. He returned to the post in 1830 but found himself at loggerheads with O'Connell, whose power and influence now rivalled his own. He returned to England in 1833.
