The features of this portrait compare fairly well with authentic portraits of Ralph Allen but are not entirely conclusive. The looped wig-end and cravat tucked through the buttonhole suggest a date of about 1730. More detailed information on this portrait is available in a National Portrait Gallery collection catalogue, John Kerslake's Early Georgian Portraits (1977, out of print).
