Landseer and Callcott were close friends and collaborated on a number of pictures. When the 6th Duke of Devonshire commissioned Landseer to paint the Scene in Olden Times at Bolton Abbey, Landseer persuaded Callcott to pose for the head of the abbot. This is a preliminary study, painted 'al prima and exquisitely finished in a sitting of three or four hours'.

Abolition of slavery in the British Empire; 780,000 slaves are freed, £20 million is allocated as compensation for slave owners and a six year apprenticeship system for freed slaves is established.
