Des Granges, one of the Huguenot refugees in London, became a Roman Catholic and followed Prince Charles into exile in Holland. His Charles II as a young prince is one of several copies from an oil by Adriaen Hannemann, painted in exile. He was appointed the King's Limner in Scotland in 1651 and painted many portraits of Charles II from youth till the Restoration. Yet he died infirm and neglected by the King, who owed him payment for at least thirteen miniatures.
