Current affairs

Four men-of-war ships are launched, the result of Charles I's desire for naval expansion. In an attempt to keep up with the increasing cost of maritime security, Attorney-General William Noye, suggests a revival of ship money, and writs are issued, initially, to ports only.

Art and science

The kings performs in Coelum Brittanicum, a masque by poet Thomas Carew, with designs by Inigo Jones. The play, which fundamentally celebrates monarchical power, is widely considered to be the best of its era.
Apothecary, Thomas Johnson publishes, Mercurius Botanicus, which includes a catalogue of indigenous British plants.

International

Albrecht Wallenstein, Duke of Friedland, supreme commander of the armies of the Habsburg Monarchy during the Thirty Years' War, is convicted of high treason and subsequently assassinated by senior officers in his force, including Scottish Colonel Walter Leslie, who may have been assigned directly by Emperor Ferdinand II.
