Augustus Henry FitzRoy became Prime Minister in 1768, and led an unstable Government for two years from 1768 to 1770. When this portrait was painted however his political career had just begun. As a young man of twenty he had married Anne Liddell, but the marriage was not happy. In 1662 they embarked on a tour of Italy, during which this portrait was painted by the Italian artist Pompeo Batoni; the couple were to separate two years later.
