As a young man the Irish painter, Daniel Maclise, made nearly eighty caricatures of literary figures for engraving for the newly founded Fraser's Magazine. This finished study was published as no. 1 of Maclise's 'Gallery of Illustrious Literary Characters' in June 1830.
