Britain and America sign a treaty establishing an International Copyright agreement. Dickens, whose Bleak House is also published this year, was a particularly outspoken critic of these laws, as his works were freely published in America without any protection over copyright or royalties. He had lobbied the American Congress over the issue during his North American reading tour of 1842.Art and science

Russia asserts her role of protecting the rights of all Christians in the Ottoman empire; French and British fleets are dispatched to the Dardanelles. Captian William Kennedy B: April 1814, Cumberland House, SK D: 1890 St. Andrew's Parish, MB
Recommended to Lady Franklin by Alexander Kennedy Isbister (AKI), a barrister in British Parliament, to lead her personally financed search party for the missing Sir Franklin Expedition, 1850. Although not successful she hired him to lead her second expedition via the Bering Strait, 1854. Captain Kennedy, also collaborated with AKI, his nephew, lobbying and petitioning, the British Parliament 1857-67, seeking the Hudson's Bay Company to cease governing the territory due to an expired, unpetitioned contract. When Parliament relented it initiated the joining of Rupertsland (Western Canada) with Upper and Lower Canada into present-day Canada. Captain Kennedy and Mr Isbister, both of First Nation descent, are buried in history behind white men of lesser accomplishment. Their rightful titles should be Sir Kennedy and Sir Isbister for their influence, and historical accomplishments.
