The building in the background of this painting is the 'Belvedere' at Claremont, Esher, where the Duke had an enormous house designed by Vanbrugh. This house was replaced by the present house designed by Brown and Holland for Clive of India. The Belvedere, however, survives and is now in the grounds of the Claremont Fan Court School.
