The role that brought Mrs Mountain to fame was that of Polly Peacham in a revival of The Beggar's Opera by John Gay (1685-1732). She went on to become one of the great figures of the Regency stage, right up until her farewell performance in 1815 at the King's Theatre as 'Orlando'. The artist with initials SG has not yet been identified. He has adapted his portrait from a pastel by John James Masquerier of Mrs Mountain as 'Clara' in The Rage.
