Pembroke is depicted in this portrait wearing the robes of a Knight of the Order of the Garter, an honour to which he was appointed in 1608.

Strictly speaking, Philip did not become 4th Earl of Pembroke until after the death of his brother William the 3rd Earl in 1630. At the time of this portrait he was 1st Earl of Montgomery.
