Richardson was an habitual self-portraitist. Horace Walpole noted that the ' good old man seems to have amused himself with writing a short poem and drawing his own or his son's portrait every day'. More detailed information on this portrait is available in a National Portrait Gallery collection catalogue, John Kerslake's Early Georgian Portraits (1977, out of print).
