This self-portrait, which was probably intended to boost Saunders' business, is inscribed 'Saunders Ipse Pinxit. Aetatis 50/ November the First Anno 1732. ' The Latin inscription presents his authorship of this self-portrait in self-aggrandizing terms. More detailed information on this portrait is available in a National Portrait Gallery collection catalogue, John Kerslake's Early Georgian Portraits (1977, out of print).
