This portrait has previously been identified as the poet James Thomson or as the poet and diplomat Matthew Prior. It is thought to represent Samuel Scott but this identification is inconclusive and the artist has yet to be identified. More detailed information on this portrait is available in a National Portrait Gallery collection catalogue, John Kerslake's Early Georgian Portraits (1977, out of print).
