Thomas More is sent to the Tower of London for refusing to take the Oath of Succession which recognised Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn's children as heirs to the throne.
Act of Supremacy is passed declaring Henry VIII as 'Supreme Head of the Church of England'.

Publication in Basel of Historia Anglica (English History) by the Italian scholar Polydore Vergil.
Cambridge University Press is founded with a royal charter by King Henry VIII.

The Spanish priest Ignatius Loyola founds the Jesuits, in Paris. Loyola will become one of the most influential figures of the Catholic Counter-Reformation.
The German Protestant reformer Martin Luther publishes his German translation of the Bible.
The French navigator Jacques Cartier explores the shores of the Saint Lawrence River and he takes possession of present-day Canada in the name of Francis I of France.
