As the eighteenth-century's most moving hero there was a huge demand for images commemorating Wolfe and his dramatic death. Few have any claim to authentic likeness but their production, exhibition and reproduction helped to increase Wolfe's heroic status. More detailed information on this portrait is available in a National Portrait Gallery collection catalogue, John Kerslake's Early Georgian Portraits (1977, out of print).
