The Arthur Devis self-portrait, surprisingly freely painted, gives little idea of his speciality: conversation pieces and small, meticulously painted doll-like whole-lengths set in attractive landscapes or interiors. It relates to the oil self-portrait, c.1737, in the Harris Museum, Preston.
