Journeying artists in post-Napoleonic Europe not only headed for the splendours of Rome, but the natural landscape of the Italian campagna. For landscape and history painters or those interested in experimenting with these genres, rural Italy's peasants and classical ruins were subjects of great artistic interest. This highly-detailed pencil drawing of an old overgrown stone arch frames two diminutive contemporary figures. The subject can be related to the taste, during the 1820s and 1830s, for Italian picturesque scenes that included monumental ruins and answered the British fascination for Italy's past and present.
