Townsend, a soldier and politician, fought in Germany and Scotland and served for some years as aide-de-camp to William, Duke of Cumberland. He received the surrender of Quebec after the death of James Wolfe and was Lord Lieutenant of Ireland (1767-1772). In his capacity as Lord Lieutenant of Norfolk, he organise the militia of the county against the threatened invasion of Napoleon Bonaparte. A talented caricaturist, an album of his sketches was collected by his friend William Windham and is now in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery. This caricature of a Native American family is likely to have been made by Townsend when he was serving under Wolfe in 1759.
