Halley is depicted in this portrait by Whood with a volume marked 'Newton' and a chart showing the path across southern England which he predicted for the total solar eclipse of 3 May 1715.

Their rapid inflation and the speculation mania it had encouraged become known as the South Sea Bubble. Charles Townshend, 2nd Viscount Townshend returns to the Whig ministry.
