This drawing is one of a series that were commissioned by Joyce Grenfell after she met the artist in 1951. As well as making a number of portraits of Joyce Grenfell herself, John Ward drew a variety of her friends and acquaintances. Richard Addinsell wrote music for her lyrics and regularly accompanied her on the piano.
