Amy Johnson is the first woman to fly solo to Australia. She flew the 11,000 miles from Croydon to Darwin in a De Havilland Gipsy Moth named Jason and won the Harmon Trophy as well as a CBE for her achievement. She went on to break a number of other flying records, and died while serving in the Air Transport Auxiliary in 1941.Art and science

Sir Cecil Armitage was born on 8th October 1869 and died on 10th March 1933. He was a Captain in the 3rd Batallion, South Wales Borderers and fought in the Ashanti Wars of 1895/6. He joined the Colonial Service, ending as Governor of the Gambia from 1920 where he established the Department of Agiculture and founded the Armitage School. He retired to England in 1927.
