Perfidious Jim.
There is an untold story. In 1509, Henry VIII was approached by a man called Thomas Spinelli, who had been the eyes and ears of Henry VII in Europe. He offered to perform the same duties for the new King. As a 'freebee' he told Henry of 7 great Cannons being cast in Antwerp and a 1,000 ton ship with the timbers laid up ready to build for James too. In 1509, James was preparing to teach young Henry a lesson. Henry's obedience to Pope Julius II gave James a golden opportuninty to 'legitimately' invade England. In The State Papers of Madrid, you will find described all of the Pavilions of the Scots. You'll also find the Three ships filled with goodies which landed at Dunbar. In a vintage Arms Race. Henry had 12 guns cast called the Apostles.
Scotland's 'special relationship with France' was a bit like the British 'Special Relationship' with America. Good sense goes out of the window and they/we end up fighting daft wars in which, they/we are often the Casualties.
