Vienna besieged by the forces of Suleiman I, Sultan of the Ottoman Empire. The siege marks the Ottoman Empire's furthest expansion into Europe.
At the Second Diet of Speyer in Germany, a minority of Protestant princes read a 'Protest' against the reversal of earlier church reforms and the reinstatement of the Edict of Worms (1521) by the Catholic majority; the term 'Protestant' is born.
