Robert Baden Powell, a former lieutenant-general in the British Army, forms the Boy Scout Movement after holding a camp on Brownsea Island for a group of twenty-two boys of mixed social background. Baden Powell was inspired after finding that his 1903 military training manual Aids to Scouting had become a bestseller, and was being used by teachers and youth workers. The Scout movement has become a Worldwide phenomenon, with over 38 million members in 216 countries.Art and science
The poet, author and critic Edmund Gosse publishes his autobiography Father and Son, an account of his relationship with his devout Christian father, the zoologist Phillip Gosse. Edmund's detailing of his loss of faith is a reflection on the Victorian age itself.Anna Pavlova first dances The Dying Swan, choreographed by Michel Fokine to music by Camille Saint-Saens, at a charity performance.

Robert Duncan was the Unionist M.P. for Govan from 1906 to 1910. His engineering company made ships’ engines on the Clyde, employing 450 men, the senior of whom shared in the profits of the company. Robert Duncan was well known in his native city of Glasgow for his political activism, his innovative ideas, his public service, and also his poetry, which was published in the Glasgow Herald and other places. He was a man of many interests: he loved the beautiful Scottish countryside, had a country house near Loch Earn, loved sailing, golf, and edited a memorial volume of Carlyle’s work. He was also noted for his sense of humor, and inspired great affection in all his family.
His wife, Mary, shown beside him in the portrait, was the daughter of William Jolly, H.M.I.S. Their son, Professor William Jolly Duncan, F.R.S., was a distinguished aeronautical engineer, who made an important contribution to the war effort in the 1940’s and was awarded a C.B.E. for his services to the nation.
