Current affairs

Asquith's Liberal government introduces the Parliament Act to curb the powers of the House of Lords following the clash between the Commons and Lords over the 1909 People's Budget. The Act removed the Lords' power to veto bills, reduced the length of Parliament from seven to five years, and provided for the payment of MPs.

Art and science

Ernest Rutherford discovers the structure of the atom. The New Zealand born physicist working in Manchester showed with his Nuclear Model that electrons orbited a nucleus composed of protons and neutrons. The discovery paved the way for nuclear physics.

International

The Polish Chemist, Marie Curie, becomes the first woman to win the Nobel Prize for her discovery in 1898 of the radioactive element, Radon.
The Mona Lisa is stolen from the Louvre. The masterpiece was missing for two years, during which time suspicion fell on avant-garde poet Guillaume Apollinaire and his friend Pablo Picasso, before Vincenzo Peruggia, an employee of the Louvre, was arrested in Florence.

Martin Edward Scobell Boissier RN DSO; born 27 August 1884; died 1964 whilst staying at the Imperial Hotel, Torquay; Flag Lt-Commander RN 1915; Commander 1918; Captain 1927; Awarded DSO in 1915. He married Patricia Leila Hervey on 8 March 1940 and they lived at 4 Alter's Acres, Weeke, nr Winchester. They had no children.

Martin was the second son of The Rev Frederick Scobell Boissier 1854-1951. Maritn's eldest brother was Arthur Paul Boissier who was at one stage, headmaster of Harrow School 1940-1942.

His younger brothers were (1) Ernest Gabriel Boissier DSC 1886-1976, my grandfather. My father Martin Scobell Boissier is named after Martin Edward Scobell Boissier. And (2), William Arthur Marshall Boissier (1889-1917) who was accidentally drowned in Flanders.

My father is now 92 and his short term memory is not so good but he does remember his uncle Martin quite clearly. He said that he was a very good sportsman and rather'one for the ladies'! My niece recently came across a golf plaques in Harewood Downs Golf Club where Martin Boissier won the Fletcher Cup and The Scratch Cup in 1928.
