Provoked by the candidacy of German Prince Leopold Hohenzollen-Sigmaringen for the Spanish throne, France declared war in July after Bismark published the deliberately provocative Ems telegraph, in which the French were represented in an offensive light on the issue.

We own an exact copy of this photo in what appears to be the exact same format. The photo is mounted on a card mat that is rounded on the corners, and the edges are gold. The photo is labeled on the bottom as "Unser Kronprinz: und sein Umgebung vor der Villa Zirio in San Remo. The back of the card is blank, and the number 150 is written on the upper left in what appears to be pencil. In addition to the card, we also have an accompanying piece of paper with a printed sketch in which of all the persons in the photo are numbered and identified. The persons listed are:
