Humphrey Cheetham was born in 1580 at Crumpsall Hall, the family home. He bought Clayton Hall with his brother George in 1620 from the Byron family. He dropped the extra 'e' in his surname on becoming the Sheriff of Lancashire & was awarded a coat-of-arms. Chetham also collected the unpopular Ship Money. He turned down a knighthood & had to pay a fine. During the English Civil War, Humphrey was in charge of the Lancashire Parliamentary war accounts & soldiers were billeted at both Clayton Hall (under Fairfax) & Turton Towers (which he also owned). In 1653, at the grand old age of 74, he died at Clayton Hall. The Hall is still there, surrounded by a dry moat & is open on the 1st & 3rd Saturdays of each month, completely free of charge.
