This Lithograph uses similar compositional devices to other portraits of Holman published in his travel writings. His hand, gesturing towards a globe, signals how he perceived the world through a highly skilled touch; the writing frame resting beside him indicates how he recorded experiences without vision. Compiler of the first written Fernadian-English vocabulary, Holman holds a drawing of the Fernadian warrior 'Cut-Throat', reproduced in Voyage Round the World (1834-5). This was an account of his circumnavigation of the globe: notably, he was one of the first travellers to achieve this. The print is inscribed with a line from Milton's Paradise Lost.
