This engraving represents a transition between portraits purporting to be authentic representation of Lady Jane Grey and narrative pictures that re-enact scenes from her life in a consciously fictional manner. As with attributions to Holbein, the association of the Dutch painter and poet Lucas de Here with this picture is optimistic. The original painting is described in an 1851 catalogue of the pictures at Althorp House as showing Lady Jane 'sitting at her study at her father's mansion near Leicester. Out of the windows are seen the remarkable spires of that town.'
