The effects of Morrison's punishing work schedule are visible in this pensive portrait of the politician taken by the society photographer Baron. By 1953, Morrison was less concerned about projecting a dynamic public image. Commentators began to note a lack of sprightliness in the famous quiff. Although recovered from the nearly fatal thrombosis he suffered in 1947, he endured a series of both professional and personal setbacks, including the death of his wife Margaret in July 1953 and a gradual retrenchment in his control of the Labour party. Most frustratingly, the party leadership continued to elude him.
